Here's my Totally Awkward Tuesday story, hosted by
Tova Darling.
One evening, when I was around ten years old, I was riding in the car with my mother. She and I were on our way home. I can't quite remember where we were coming from but it was probably church.
We were listening to the radio. I started to think about AM and FM radio. What was the difference between AM and FM stations? We seemed to listen to FM radio a lot. What did FM stand for? I posed this question to my mother. "What does FM stand for?"
She quickly glanced over at me with an apprehensive look on her face. Then, looking straight ahead, she replied, "Mother F#%&$"
Total Silence. Now I was looking straight ahead with a look of apprehension. I had never heard my mother say a bad word in my life. So I did what any other ten year old child would when she heard her mother say a bad word for the first time - I asked her to repeat it.
My mother repeated it but this time she furrowed her brow in irritation, "Mother F#%&$." I must have looked dumbstruck because she looked over at me and said, "You asked what MF stands for right?"
"No," I replied, "FM, like the radio stations."
Her entire demeanor slightly dropped with embarrassment as she scoffed, "Oh! I don't know what FM stands for."
Neither of us said anything else for the remainder of the car ride. Totally awkward.
