Nobody Gonna Break Our Stride.

Erica Smith

How do you know when it's time to hit restart?

Every once in awhile I get stuck. Usually after friends or family members (OK, friends) share exciting news -- promotions, raises, new blogs, new projects, new jobs, that sort of thing -- that I am jealous of. Ugh. Yeah, jealous.

Usually I can yell "Get over yourself!" and get rid of crazy notions. Or I can make a plan and solve whatever the problem is. Now, though, it would be a bigger leap. It'd require hitting re-start, which is pretty scary. I haven't been able to figure out the next step -- or even the first step.

I just know it's time to do something different.

You know, after almost 10 years working in the for-profit sector, I just re-joined the nonprofit world, and am LOVING the career shift. It's even inspired me to go back for my master's degree. Making a dramatic shift in the KIND of work you do can do wonders for your mental well-being. I much prefer coming home after a hellish day, realizing that no matter how lousy my day might have been, I still helped someone in need. It's not quite as easy to reconcile yourself to a bad day when all you've managed to do it put another dollar in your boss' pocket.

I'd love to hit restart on my work life.

Just quit and find something good.

Smart part of me says find a job to go to BEFORE I quit.

Hitting re-start can be scary...but it can be invigorating too! I'm working on re-inventing my life this year, so I can relate. I can also say it's better than staying stuck where you are until you're running on empty.

Taking that leap is a frightening prospect. Just shut your eyes, hold your nose and jump!
