I've been in denial about what appears to be a seasonal cold, and my age, too, I guess. And I began realizing this yesterday when I woke up with a fever, to augment the stuffy nose and incessant cough I've been walking around with for a couple of weeks. It certainly hasn't been any kind of flu, thankfully.
"It's okay," I've said. "I think I might have allergies."
No, Justine. I don't think you do. And it hit me when I was leaving Jackie's (Writerjax) house last night. A few of us were hanging ou…

Things are going to change soon, I can feel it (I think). I think my days of restlessness and boredom are numbered. Info about good job opportunities is flowing my way (thanks GrammarGirl & WriterJax), all of which I feel excited about, since the job descriptions match my resume quite well.
And I got a voicemail just a little while ago from a technology company based in NJ, about an opening in their Springfield (MA) office. I'm already armed with questions...... in particular, "what's the pa…

As the cliche goes: a lot can happen in a year. My brother got married, one of my closest friends (WriterJax) got married, another of my closest friends (Fanny aka Tiff, who is more like a close older sister) got married, and I met cousins on my mom's side of the family that I'd never even seen pictures of. My little sister traveled (like a big girl) to Kansas and back. I finally got to see the New Kids on the Block in concert (no comments from the haters in the peanut gallery, please).
While I…

This morning I restarted the morning gym routine I had before moving out east. Those who know me know that I'm not (at all) a morning person, so waking up even just an hour before I normally would have to is going to be tough. But it'll be more than worth it. I've been a slacker, big time, in recent months as far as exercising is concerned. I've almost been a complete stranger to my gym, so I figure it's probably time to get my money's worth again.
Stepping back into the place I had apparently t…

As Randy Marsh so eloquently screamed in the streets of South Park recently, change is here! "Obama says everything is gonna change! Yes we can!"
While I'm getting pretty tired of the now 24-hour coverage of the countdown to the presidential inauguration tomorrow, I am filled with optimism, and it seems to be lurking around every corner. In the midst of a recession and a war that I will fore-go commenting on at this time, we desperately need change. We need to help our uninsured, homeless, joble…

I can't believe it's Thanksgiving already. It seems like just last week I was moving to the east coast and walking off my back porch to the beach (aka my back yard na na na na na na). It's way too cold now to go out there on a Saturday afternoon with my blanket, beach chair, book, iPod, water & sunscreen. Sad.
But I can wrap myself up in a sweatshirt and fleece jacket and go out there anyway. It's still really pretty looking out my living room window in the morning to see the sun rise over t…

I'm headed back west for the weekend for my best friend's sister's wedding. Oddly, I can't wait to get back to a good ole-fashioned Western Massachusetts autumn. Don't get me wrong, I love the beach life and all, but
nothing compares to the changing colors of leaves on the hundreds of trees that surround everything, or the crisp breeze that compliments a blue sky that's filled with nothing but sunshine, or picking pumpkins and apples on a Saturday afternoon.
I guess it's true: you don't k…

Does that valley girl a few cubes over really need to be talking so much? And why is she always talking to that I-think-I'm-sooo-cool-and-hip-because-I-hang-out-in-coffee-shops-and-write-poetry-and-watch-indy-movies guy next to me?
Like, oh, my, god. Totally.
And why do I like to do that I-have-to-describe-people-using-dashes-between-every-word thing? I don't know either.

I’ve never been that good at speaking in front of more than a few people at a time, when all of their attention is on me. Although, wait, I was a finalist in the 5th grade speech contest. But damn it, that was what…. 36 years ago? At least.
So anyway…. when I was first reminded a few weeks ago that part of my job is coming up with ideas for stories, audio-conferences, webcasts and the like, I had no reservations. I knew this was part of the job, and after all, I’d done that for about eight years…

It's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all. Right?
My baby-Cassie, a 9-year-old boxer, took her last breath on my leg Monday afternoon. It was time. Although I wish I had more of it.
About 7 years ago, I talked my then-boyfriend into adopting the cutest little 1-year-old white boxer. She was so sweet, her nub of a tail wagging so hard that it drew her whole back end with it.; the ex (aka Daddy) used to call her Wiggles. While we tried hard to make sure she behaved and d…

I'm hoping green is my color next month.... if not, it doesn't matter because I'll have to sport it anyway. And I couldn't be happier or more excited about it. WriterJax's wedding is almost right around the corner - only a few weeks to go!
Us girls are wearing these great peridot/olive green (peridot is green right? Not orange or something?) Regardless, the dresses are cute, and I can't wait to compliment it with my wicked awesome green/brown/yellow polkadot shoes.
Me and Jax are getting our hai…

Hello, I'm Justine, Associate Editor for HealthLeaders Media (part of HCPro). Wooo!!!!
After two great interviews with the Marblehead-based company, they invited me yesterday to become a part of their team. I haven't been this excited, hopeful or optimistic about anything in a really long time. Everyone I've met there so far has been awesome - almost as soon as I walked into the building for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I felt comfortable. I was nervous, of course, as most people are in…

Relief. That's the best way to describe how I've felt since confidently walking out of the Turley Publications building in recent days. I've laid in bed thinking about how I've finally been able to put down that 2,000-pound weight that was my job for 7 years. No more feeling unappreciated and inadequate. Yup, that's right: no more Turley for me! I don't remember the last time I felt so happy. They screwed me over, via years of putting up with treatment that no one should have to deal with. When…

Something's got to give. Something's gotta change - otherwise, I don't know what I'll do. I'm heading to a Board of Selectmen meeting in a minute. Yes, I realize it's Saturday - but what better day to walk through the elementary school in Sturbridge with the architect who is designing the renovation proposal? I certainly can't think of a better time. I mean, who really needs to work during the work week anyway?
I bet my warm bed misses me. I take comfort in that.

Is it just me, or does anyone else (namely Jac a.k.a. WriterJax, Sarah and Lisa) loath their ancestors today for setting up permanent camp in western Massachusetts centuries ago? I mean, really. Snow, rain, freezing rain, sleet and flooding? And that was just in the past 24 hours.
This kind of weather was awesome when I was under 12 years old, scurrying to get my snowpants, jacket and all of the necessary accessories that would keep my extremities toasty. Armed with those red plastic sleds, we w…

Well well well, so here I am. Although now lounging in a fancy hotel room in Boston, I sat through several press association workshops today in an effort to enhance myself as a writer/journalist. Much of it covered things I already know and have been doing for almost 10 years. As I learned more about writing good headlines and did what I could to save my ears from the dull screeching that was a "I'm not as smart as I try to convey so I use fancy words and attempt witty banter" woman, I wondered…
