Need your tips, TSBs

Hey all, I started a new blog called Budge - cool budget tips for hipsters like us. The idea is to cull cool little money saving tips from all sorts of people and post them on Budge for all the world to see. Have a cool tip? Email me at writerjax@gmail.com, or DM me here on this site. I'll link to your blog/company with the post if I publish your tip, and right now, your chances are great, as I just launched Budge about five minutes ago. Continue

Postcard Express

A few weeks ago, Vanessa at Random Ramblings started a Postcard Round Robin on TSB, and a few bloggers started exchanging snail mail with each other. Today, mixed in with the bills and the PennySaver, I got my first postcard from Vanessa herself - one she picked up while in San Fran, at this year's BlogHer. I sent my card to her earlier this week, so I hope she gets it soon - unlike V, I was not so smart as to afix a return address label, so if the 41-cent stamp that's no good for a real lett… Continue

iPhone! iPhone! Music! Video! But mostly iPHONE!

An hour from now EST (6pm 7/11), my client Del Padre Digital (www.delpadre.com ) will be shooting new footage at the 'emergency request' of their partner, Proficient Audio/SpeakerCraft in Riverside Calif., for their new product MODE for iPhone. The HD footage will be added to an existing advertisement originally created for the Touch, and pushed via Web channels. This 'emergency video shoot' is an interesting byproduct of today's hysteria. Here's the… Continue

I Need a Haven

Before I moved in with Archervision, I had my own little second-floor apartment in a two-family home, with a deck overlooking a park. I live in a vibrant, yet moderately economically depressed, area of Massachusetts, so the real estate is cherry if you do a little homework. My little nook in the world had curved, Mexican-inspired doorways and a huge kitchen. It had a spare room I used as my office, but that also gave me a certain sense of security because I knew if I ever fell on hard times I c… Continue

When I Write the Book...

Did you pick a word to live by for 2008, in lieu of a resolution? If so, how are you doing with it? I've lapsed lately in paying close attention to my own word: power. I've done relatively well defining what power means and how I can apply it to my life, but I haven't been as diligent in reminding myself to incorporate those findings into the daily grind. As this is my first time choosing a word for such purposes, I'm not going to beat myself up about not getting it exactly right, and moreover… Continue

I'd like to thank iParty ...

It's Oscar Night! For me, that means two things: I'm looking forward to hours of snarky Red Carpet television and an excuse to eat snacks, and I'm also reflecting on my annual Oscar party, held last night. Hard to believe, but at my 'advanced age' (I kid) I've already hosted 11 Oscar parties, beginning in college. Here's the history of the festivities: Guests are asked to bring an Oscar-themed food or beverage to share and to be judged in one of four categories - Best Name, Best Tasting, Most… Continue

Conversation

Jax: Where's the cat? Mark: I dunno. Jax: I haven't seen him all night. I'm worried. Mark: He's around. Jax: He's not in the dryer, is he? Mark: In the dry -- no, he's not in the dryer. Jax: How can you be so sure? Mark: Well it's running, for one. Jax: That's why I'm worried. note: Ironically, he was sleeping in the dirty laundry pile. Continue

I'm in a Donkey Butt Rut

Why donkey butt? Because that's what I feel like I've been folded, ass over torso, into today.

I don't know if it's these long New England winters or the preponderance of too-much-crap-to-do, but I've been in a rut for a while now and being sick today isn't helping.

I went out for dinner with some friends last night to celebrate a birthday - she chose Thai, which is normally a great choice. But the headache set in half-way through the Grammys last night (I had this great rolling

Bloggerites, Unite ... and tell me it's going to be all right

I am having one crapola week professionally.

First I missed an important appointment because I wrote the wrong day down. Then I fell behind on my assignments, finding it impossible to catch up while my laptop struggled to understand, along with me, why Vista sucks. In the midst of that, I had a contact for a story I wrote a while ago who didn't pan out decide to call the editor about it and whine. I was in the right, but it's still irritating. I'm a little tired of being on the defensive as a

Party Sightings

I'm always on the lookout for cool new stuff, and I don't always find things in stores alone. Take for instance a party we attended this Saturday at our friends' house.

First, I got to (finally) play Guitar Hero for the first time, made cooler by our friends' massive tv screen:

On a smaller but no less nifty scal

Heath Ledger

There's been a lot of talk in the blogosphere about actor Heath Ledger's passing yesterday.

While it seems many of us weren't necessarily huge fans and certainly didn't know Ledger personally, his death resonates with thirtysomethings and twentysomethings especially, who see his passing as tragic and a total loss of great, still burgeoning talent.

We've begun to talk a lot about what it means to be our age here at TSB, and a big piece of that discussion is our careers and how many of us fe… Continue

Conversation: Linda, We Hardly Knew Ye

Conversation, while converting LP tracks to mp3 with my new, fantastic ion LP converter:

Mark: What album is this?

Jax: Paul McCartney.

Mark: Yeah I know that, but what's the album called.

Jax: McCartney. It's just McCartney. Linda plays the piano and supplies the harmonies.

Mark: What do you think Paul told her? To just run her knuckles up and down the keys?

Jax: You know, you are really *down* on Linda McCartney. Yoko was on John's albums. If I had to choose, I think I'd take… Continue

Mark: ... a little while.

Power

This is my word for 2008: Power.

Not in the dictator-drunk-with-power kind of way, mind you, but in a strong, self-possessed, I-can-do-anything-and-I'll-do-it-with-bells-on-thank-you-very-much way.

I gave 'power' a test run today, and I'm convinced it was the way to go. I spoke at the Annual Western New England College Media Conference , as part of a panel of journalists.

Spit Out Your Words

I was in a local bagel shop trying to look professional while wolfing down a sesame with veggie cream cheese when I first heard about the 'Pick a Word for the New Year' phenomenon.

Kerstin , an interview subject for a freelance article I just finished for The Women's Times, told me about it while we talked about fitness, weight loss, and our hopes for 2008.

"Last year, I picked 'glow,' but it wasn't quite right," she said. "This year, I picked 'do,' as in 'Just do it, Kerstin!"
