Vanessa Office Exam

We've all had that moment. You know the one; where we realize how stupid the people are that we work alongside every day and wonder why they make more money than we do. Sometimes we come about this information in strange random ways like Maxie pointed out, when someone at her office recently asked her how to look up a phone number in the phone book. Speaking from personal experience, other times it's blatantly obvious, like walking into the office at the precise moment your boss, who has no idea… Continue

LW As Time Goes By......

Okay, okay, okay. I know allright? Over two months (TWO MONTHS!) since I've had anything to say. Okay, thats a fib (I do that sometimes) I've had plenty to say but I've just been too bloody busy to say it. There's a lot to catch up on. For a start I've changed jobs, changed houses, very almost changed states (give me five minutes further down the road and I would have) and well I've pretty much changed lives. I've gone in one foul swoop (do I have that terminology right? Cause it wasn't foul at… Continue

Justine Times are a-changing

Hello, I'm Justine, Associate Editor for HealthLeaders Media (part of HCPro). Wooo!!!! After two great interviews with the Marblehead-based company, they invited me yesterday to become a part of their team. I haven't been this excited, hopeful or optimistic about anything in a really long time. Everyone I've met there so far has been awesome - almost as soon as I walked into the building for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I felt comfortable. I was nervous, of course, as most people are in… Continue

Justine Lord All Mighty, I'm free at last!

Relief. That's the best way to describe how I've felt since confidently walking out of the Turley Publications building in recent days. I've laid in bed thinking about how I've finally been able to put down that 2,000-pound weight that was my job for 7 years. No more feeling unappreciated and inadequate. Yup, that's right: no more Turley for me! I don't remember the last time I felt so happy. Although they screwed me over by "letting me go" (after years of putting up with treatment that no one s… Continue

LogicGirl What Shamu Taught Me About Life, Love, and Marriage

The book "What Shamu Taught Me About Life, Love, and Marriage", which was published earlier this year, came about as a result of a 2006 New York Times article, "What Shamu Taught Me About a Happy Marriage" by writer and journalist Amy Sutherland. The premise of the article, which was that people could be trained to exhibit the behaviour you wanted in the way animals were by their trainers, generated a lot of interest and consequently was the most emailed NYT article that year. People either lov… Continue

ohmyalikins my definition of spring break didn't quite come to fruition during my actual spring break!

wow. that was a tough "break" to say the least! we headed to california to retrieve my mother because the state was about to take her from her home. she suffers from a multitude of mental health issues that haven't been diagnosed as of yet and was, well, not happy with all the extra "help" we had come over to her home. we had a few violent outbursts that i am not pleased that emilee was subjected to, but, she ultimately handled it very well for a 5 year old. she knew right off the bat th…

Well, here it is. A more private blog. :) One where my face isn't shown and my real name is tucked away in the safe folds of glorious anonymity. Well, almost. Joseph Bednar Kill the Wabbits

I was talking to Jenn today about how many of our Christmas and Easter traditions are pagan in origin, but have become cheerful holiday customs that coexist with the Christian meaning of the holidays. Sort of. I mean, culturally, the Santa side of Christmas meshes fairly seamlessly with the birth of Christ for no reason that I can explain. It just feels right. Generations of kids have learned about Jesus' birth while waiting anxiously for Santa, and, in most cases, the dichotomy didn't permanen… Continue

LogicGirl Standing Humiliated

I do not follow the lurid details of political scandals that hit the front pages of newspapers with a regular frequency that has ceased to be surprising. It is the usual stuff repeated time and time again - married politician engages in some sick and perverted secret behaviour, or he commits a federal felony, secret is revealed to all, politician embarrasses his wife, family and ruins his reputation, politician falls from grace, loses political power, the newspapers hound him for a time, then fo… Continue

WriterJax I Need a Haven

Before I moved in with Archervision, I had my own little second-floor apartment in a two-family home, with a deck overlooking a park. I live in a vibrant, yet moderately economically depressed, area of Massachusetts, so the real estate is cherry if you do a little homework. My little nook in the world had curved, Mexican-inspired doorways and a huge kitchen. It had a spare room I used as my office, but that also gave me a certain sense of security because I knew if I ever fell on hard times I c… Continue

Erica Smith It's a complicated family

My grandmother died tonight. My family is strange -- my mother's the oldest of three, but has been the outcast for awhile. Mostly because my parents divorced about 20 years ago. That was not acceptable to my grandparents or my mother's siblings, especially my aunt. (My relationship with my father is strange, too. I haven't talked to him since kicking him out of the procession at my sister's wedding (she didn't want him there) in 2005. And even then, I didn't talk to him. Or at the reception aft… Continue

Something's got to give. Something's gotta change - otherwise, I don't know what I'll do. I'm heading to a Board of Selectmen meeting in a minute. Yes, I realize it's Saturday - but what better day to walk through the elementary school in Sturbridge with the architect who is designing the renovation proposal? I certainly can't think of a better time. I mean, who really needs to work during the work week anyway? I bet my warm bed misses me. I take comfort in that. Continue

Erica Smith How do you know when it's time to hit restart?

Every once in awhile I get stuck. Usually after friends or family members (OK, friends) share exciting news -- promotions, raises, new blogs, new projects, new jobs, that sort of thing -- that I am jealous of. Ugh. Yeah, jealous. Usually I can yell "Get over yourself!" and get rid of crazy notions. Or I can make a plan and solve whatever the problem is. Now, though, it would be a bigger leap. It'd require hitting re-start, which is pretty scary. I haven't been able to figure out the next step -… Continue

1218Blog My Thirties Self

Did anyone out there watch Quarterlife on Monday night? I found it entertaining and somewhat true to life when I was in my twenties. It started me thinking of myself in the phases of my life and where I am today and if I am where I want to be. So I put it to paper and realized at this point in my life I have incorporated parts of my teen self and twenties self to create my thirties self. WriterJax When I Write the Book...

Did you pick a word to live by for 2008, in lieu of a resolution? If so, how are you doing with it? I've lapsed lately in paying close attention to my own word: power. I've done relatively well defining what power means and how I can apply it to my life, but I haven't been as diligent in reminding myself to incorporate those findings into the daily grind. As this is my first time choosing a word for such purposes, I'm not going to beat myself up about not getting it exactly right, and moreover… Continue

Hard to believe, but at my 'advanced age' (I kid) I've already hosted 11 Oscar parties, beginning in college. Here's the history of the festivities: Guests are asked to bring an Oscar-themed food or beverage to share and to be judged in one of four categories - Best Name, Best Tasting, Most… Continue

Grammargirl Home Sweet Home

To think that we complain about housing costs here in the Northeast! It’s hard to believe that, in some areas of the country, people making $125,000 a year qualify for subsidized housing. Remember when $100,000 was a lot of money? Now, it’s barely enough to keep you in the so-called middle class. With the Oscars back on track for this weekend, I thought now might be an appropriate time to recognize those films that did not make the cut. I am talking about the Razzies, of course. The Golden Raspberry Awards showed no mercy to Lindsey Lohan, bestowing three of its "worst" nominations to the troubled star whose escapades in 2007 made even Robert Downey Jr. cringe. Lohan, whose 2007 was marred by rehab stints and arrests, as well as a string of box-office bombs, was dinged for her thriller… Continue

Every marriage is unique, but most follow a similar path that flows through seven distinct stages. Well well well, so here I am. Although now lounging in a fancy hotel room in Boston, I sat through several press association workshops today in an effort to enhance myself as a writer/journalist. Much of it covered things I already know and have been doing for almost 10 years. I’d like to report a robbery please. Actually, I think there has been some sort of mass theft happen as I have quite a few items that can’t be accounted for right now. Namely my sense of humour, my heart and my mind. The reason I think they have been stolen is that no matter how much I like to think so, my heart and my mind generally don’t see eye to eye, and one truly doubts they have run off together like a pair of lovestruck teenagers on Home and Away.

I’ve been thinking tonight about what a fickle thing Love can be. For once I’m not being cynical either. I know love is grand, I know it makes the world go round, I know it has the almighty power to both start and end wars. But at the end of the day, what a fickle thing Love can be.

It hit me tonight quite unexpectedly as I was sifting through the memories I keep safely tucked away in my mind, that I was once the girl of someones dreams. Someone once took weeks to get the courage to…

There's been a lot of talk in the blogosphere about actor Heath Ledger's passing yesterday.
