Mel's Diner Italian Fish Soup

When I have time I use all fresh ingredients, but I gave my "middle of the week version" for this post. I double this recipe usually to stretch it for lunch or dinner the next day. Enjoy. 1 can (about 14 ounces) Diced tomatoes 1 can (about 14 ounces) Chicken stock 1/2 cup of chopped celery 1/2 cup of chopped onion 3 cloves of garlic, minced 1 tbls of olive oil 2 tsp of fennel seeds 1 tsp tumeric (more for color than for flavor) 1/2 tsp of dried basil 1/2 tsp of dried oregano 1/4 tsp of red pe… Continue

Cha I'm here, kicking and screaming.

And so here I am. A 30something. 31 to be exact. Granted, I'm a baby in this business, but it's already hitting me pretty hard. I don't feel 30something. On a good day I feel 25 or even 23, others I feel far, far older. Either way, one thing is for sure, I am not enjoying "growing" up. I have no life insurance, medical aid, pension fund, I don't own a car or a home. I do however own a very pretty cat which has been with me for six years. I have a head full of a lifetimes' memories and far too m… Continue

Angelia Sims Surviving the Teen Years

My daughter can not ride a bike. I didn’t teach her. That’s on me, yes? That’s what I thought. Actually, she will tell you she KNOWS HOW to ride a bike. You know, the inner workings and concept of it, but she just CAN’T. Got all that? Here is how the conversation goes. Sydney: I know HOW to ride a bike, I just can’t. Me:(???????) No, sweetie if you CAN’T ride a bike, then you don’t know how. Sydney: MOM! I know HOW to ride a bike. I know what to do. I just can’t. Me:(????????????????????) N… Continue

Cindy Personal Statement

I thought I'd share this although I may have told you some of these stories already. This is the personal, very non-technical essay that schools require for admission. Of course the pictures won't be included and I may tweak it a bit, but it's almost done... here we go... ;-p Continue

Maria Immunity

Tis the season for the cough and the cold, the lethargy and the desire to sleep until noon…it’s Fall and soon will be Winter…H1N1 is on the loose and panic over the flu of any kind is in the air. Normally, I roll with the punches and get my flu shot like everyone else and think it’s enough. This time, I’m more concerned than I used to. I’ve been noticing my health more as I should, and I realized that I have to be more vigilant and stop taking myself and my health for granted. Living with diabet… Continue

Hector Old Empire

Like a lot of people, I have no affiliation to any religion, but this is not to say that I don't have a belief in an existence after death. Indeed after pondering the notion over numerous bottles of Old Empire I recently came to the conclusion that I will find out one way or the other when my terminal breath leaves my body and I will worry about it then; but for the record, I believe that when I kick the bucket (hopefully as an old man who has spent his latter years prodding younger generations… Continue

DauNae Dog-lemma

Can you really just be friends? I guess that question varies depending on the persons and situation of course but I am asking it out loud for myself and for my situation. I mean, I thought we could on some level at least. I realize that it was maybe just us being us and trying to do the thing we thought was right and would make others feel more comfortable too. Where is all this coming from you may be wondering? Well last week I went to pick up our dog for a long weekend visit with me and it be… Continue

Maria I've missed you old friend.

In the past year, my Facebook page has been filled with friend requests. Old friends that I haven’t seen since high school. There are people I haven’t spoken to in almost 20 years. These requests didn’t really surface until after my Sweet 16 high school reunion in 2007. Fifteen years had passed without fanfare until someone in the class realized that we missed the milestone. After that, a floodgate opened and now we’re all reaching out and keeping tabs on each other through Facebook. The convers… Continue

Maria Power of positive thought

From time to time, I search through past emails just to reminsce and to remember certain events, moments, and conversations. It's also a great way to look at where I've been compared to where I am now. I'm put some random term in the search function of my gmail account and see what comes up. In most cases, I've looked at old conversations I've had with certain people to remind myself of the times I've had with them especially those relationships that I've either outgrown or discontinued by choic… Continue

Maria Finally, a day of nothing...

Today was a rainy Saturday and I was looking forward to this weekend. I chose not to have plans and just take the day as it came. I woke up early for a weekend, 6:30am, not able to sleep in. As I looked outside and saw the clouds, I knew this was the perfect day to do nothing. So, I got up and ate breakfast just in time to lay in bed, crack open a book that I haven't been able to put down for days now, and read. I read and kept reading for the whole day. I lunched and had my simple dinner, and a… Continue

Cindy Update From The Road

I’m at the Aloft Hotel in Dallas. It’s part of the W Hotel chain so it’s funky and classy and has the Bliss toiletries that I think are swell. Not as great as the W in L.A. but I’ve got nothing to complain about. Wait, I do. They don’t have room service. What is that all about? I was hungry and all I could get was a lame, heated up pizza at the bar. And no breakfast in bed tomorrow?!?!?! The horror…Continue

Hector Over The Hill or Just warming up?

After I joined this site, admittedly out of a curious sense of adventure, I started reminiscing about the fear I had of reaching the big three oh during my twenties. In my 29th year, I lost count of the number of nights where I would lie awake worrying about my hair spontaneously turning grey and my testicles shrivelling to the size of peanuts on my birthday. Of course I was worrying about nothing and I was pleasantly surprised to notice that I was still operating as I had done the day before an… Continue

Glen Madden The Throat-Grabbing Life

I have a challenge and then a confession. First, the challenge… It’s actually the BEST challenge to have. It grabs you by the throat and creates so many feelings and emotions that sometimes it’s hard to breathe, never mind sleep. A wonderful, inspiring, ‘fly by the seat of your pants‘ kind of challenge. How do I live a life so connected to my family that my children will be so inspired to stand on my shoulders and see further than I have EVER seen? and then…… Continue

Matthew At the first time of trying.

It was not the right time and we were not the right people, not back then at least. Floating alone on an increasingly large sea of wrongs, the setting eventually became the only right: exotic and coastal; a landscape battered by constant sunshine and a city with a feel of constant holidays, a pervading sense of carefree times and laughter. This laughter felt alien to me now; a sound associated with the world I had left behind when I boarded a plane at Heathrow, bound for Sydney via Kuala Lumpur… Continue
